1. Who we are

Soma Education Technologies is a startup based in Harare, Zimbabwe. We build school management software for Zimbabwean educational institutions. When we say "Soma", "we", "our", or "us", we mean Soma Education Technologies.

2. What data we collect

Soma collects different types of data depending on your role:

• Schools & Staff: School name, staff names, email addresses, and role information needed to operate the platform.
• Students: Student names, class enrolment, academic results, attendance records, and fee payment data — entered by authorised school staff.
• Parents: Name, email, phone number, and the student IDs of children linked to your account.
• Usage data: Standard logs including login times and feature usage to help us improve the platform.

3. How we use your data

• To provide and operate the Soma platform
• To enable school staff to manage student records and communicate with parents
• To send notifications relevant to your school or child
• To improve our products and fix bugs

We do not sell your data. We do not use student data for advertising.

4. Who can access your data

Access within the Soma platform is strictly role-based. A class teacher can only see their class. A bursar sees financial data. A parent can only see their own child's data. Headmasters have full school-level access. These permissions are enforced at the database level using Supabase Row Level Security (RLS).

5. Data storage

Soma data is stored securely on Supabase infrastructure. Data is encrypted at rest and in transit. We take reasonable technical measures to protect against unauthorised access.

6. Data retention

We retain school data for as long as your school has an active Soma subscription. Upon termination, we can provide a data export and then delete your data on request within 30 days.

7. Your rights

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We'll notify schools via email if there are significant changes.
